Chavadi- "Feeding the aged" Programme

Nivethan, a not for profit charitable organization based at Madurai, India initiated "Noon meal for the aged" programme, as part of the Chavadi initiative under its “Caring Elders” programme. Chavadi, a relaxation centre for the aged was started in the year 2008 where few seminars/workshops have been organized on topics like health, education, spirituality, etc. “Noon meals for the aged” scheme of Nivethan aims to serve the aged who are deprived, deserted by families and who are unable to take care of themselves.

Place: 123, Aaladi Sami Madam, Alagar Koil Road, Tallakulam, Madurai- 625 002, Tamilnadu, India.

January 2010

With the members of Nivethan, visited by well wishers, guests from Thiyagam Women Trust and other regular members of New Moon Day annadhanam, on January 14th 2010 the Noon meal for the aged was started in a simple gracious manner. Seven elders living alone were joining the scheme. The elders have consented to visit for lunch daily. Nivethan has requested well wishers and sponsors to visit and join the elders for lunch on a regular basis. Mr.Krishnan of Trichy and Mrs.Nandini, Kanchipuram were the first two people to sponsor the programme to be followed by other people. In these 17 days of the programme, beneficiaries raised to 13 and there were around 80 guests attended. Besides there were two occasions of a gathering on the Full Moon day and the New Moon day when the food was served in general feeding approximately 100 persons put together. Nivethan is trying to work out health programmes to these elders in a short span and the Chavadi gathering programme will be followed from april onwards. The feedback from the elders will be gathered from the visitors and will be put on the web in a short while.
